Qatar Hosted ITU Workshop for Arab States, Focused on Universal and Meaningful Connectivity- October 1st to 3rd, 2024

The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar hosted a workshop in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) focused on Universal and Meaningful Connectivity for the Arab States. The event, which took place from October 1-3, 2024, brought together key stakeholders, policymakers, and experts from across the region to discuss ways to improve digital access for everyone

The workshop aimed to find effective strategies to achieve connectivity across the Arab world, emphasizing the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in promoting sustainable development. Participants shared insights and innovative solutions to tackle connectivity challenges, which are vital for economic, social, and educational growth.

Key topics included addressing the digital divide, enhancing infrastructure, ensuring affordable services, and leveraging new technologies like 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve access.

Eng. Hussain Abdulla Salatt, Public Relations and Communication Manager at CRA, highlighted the workshop’s significance, stating, “Universal and meaningful connectivity is essential for the socio-economic development, and its importance continues to grow as we advance toward achieving the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Digital Agenda 2030. At CRA, we are committed to working alongside international partners like ITU to achieve digital inclusion in the Arab region. To realize this goal, we are focused on fostering innovation, enhancing digital infrastructure, and improving affordability, especially for underserved communities. This workshop is a significant step toward building frameworks and strategies that will enable everyone to participate in the digital economy.

Throughout the three days, attendees also discussed how to measure progress in achieving universal connectivity using ITU’s frameworks and tools. These resources were crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of policies aimed at helping all population groups, especially those in underserved and remote areas, access the digital economy.

As the Arab region continued to advance in the digital landscape, the insights gained from this workshop were key in shaping policies to ensure fair access to the internet and digital services, ultimately improving quality of life and driving development across the region.
