Saudi Arabia’s New SASO-IEC 62368-1:2020 Standard: What You Need to Know for Compliance

In May 2021, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) announced the adoption of the SASO-IEC 62368-1:2020 standard, aligning with the international IEC 62368-1:2018 (3rd Edition) for audio, video, information, and communication technology equipment. This update, effective from July 1, 2021, replaces the previously accepted standards SASO-IEC 60950-1 and SASO-IEC 60065. Under this mandate, all related equipment, such as mobile devices, chargers, batteries, smart watches, and additional consumer electronics, must comply with this updated standard to obtain SASO IECEE (SIRC) certification and Saber Certification of Conformity (CoC). Certifications granted prior to the transition date will remain valid for one year from issuance, giving manufacturers a limited grace period to update compliance.

This transition impacts a wide range of consumer and professional electronics in Saudi Arabia, extending to newer additions like gaming accessories, water kettles, and electronic smoking products. Companies exporting these products to Saudi Arabia must ensure adherence to the updated safety and performance requirements to maintain market access.
