Saudi Arabia Expands Spectrum Access for WLAN Devices in 2022

In a strategic move to support advanced wireless technologies, Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CITC) introduced updated regulations for WLAN equipment in 2022, opening up key frequency bands for unlicensed use and allowing for enhanced connectivity options. These changes, part of CITC’s larger push to modernize the country’s wireless infrastructure, offer flexibility for WLAN devices across multiple frequency bands, including the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz ranges, traditionally used for Wi-Fi.

The 2022 regulations introduce a “light licensing” framework that provides more relaxed power restrictions, specifically targeting the needs of Wi-Fi 6/6e and NR-U technologies. This new approach is designed to support secure, high-speed connections while ensuring compatibility with other wireless services, enabling both residential and commercial users to benefit from expanded access to wireless broadband.

Key highlights of the new rules include the mandatory type approval for all WLAN equipment entering the Kingdom to ensure compliance with CITC’s technical standards. These standards specify usage parameters and power limits to manage interference across bands. Additionally, CITC has allocated certain frequencies exclusively for indoor use to limit potential disruptions in more congested areas.

These updates align with CITC’s commitment to adopt international standards, such as those set by IEEE, and to keep pace with global advancements in Wi-Fi technology. The regulatory adjustments underscore Saudi Arabia’s emphasis on building a robust digital infrastructure capable of supporting next-generation connectivity across the Kingdom.

With these new CITC standards, Nano Technology Solutions is well-equipped to support clients in meeting Saudi Arabia’s WLAN compliance requirements.
